blocklists

Most of our blocks are imported from a Tier 0 blocklist from Oliphant.social; it's a high level of consensus of a list of the worst instances on the Fediverse. Our blocklist is displayed only to logged-on members, so that people keeping score of how much they're blocked, can't.

A couple more places are silenced or limited. The effect is like putting up fences, that people can talk over, but which prevent swarms.

  • Threads, from Facebook / Meta / Instagram, has been silenced / limited since before its release. (As of 2023-11, it's not federated yet.)
  • If and when the BBC instance includes reporters.

We're running Hometown, which is currently based on a slightly older version of Mastodon; we lack the Mastodon v4.2 options to allow or disallow keyword searching of our public posts.
